2022 Silver Salver Yearling Sales SA Botra - Quality runs deep in Medhurst draft

By Peter Wharton

An opportunity to buy into the best bloodlines in Australia, New Zealand and North America is being offered by the Medhurst family at the Silver Salver SA Yearling Sale on Sunday, March 27 at Globe Derby Park.

The south-east based Peter and Lesley Medhurst, one of the State’s most successful breeders and owners, will have a three-pronged draft at the sale.

Lot 2, an Art Major colt, is out of the winning McArdle mare Princess Fiona NZ, the dam of two winners from two starters and belongs to the same family as the outstanding NZ filly Oaxaca Lass, the five-time Group winner Alberto Contador and the Be Good Johnny Sprint victor Mattgregor.

The second colt, Lot 5, is by the Somebeachsomewhere horse Sunshine Beach, from the Red River Hanover mare Oy Ve Bromac, a half-sister to the NZ Sales Classic winner Falcon’s Blue Jean, the top Tasmanian pacer The Majority and to the dams of the NZ Franklin Cup winner and sire Attorney General, the Group winner Crown Bromac and Crown Defender, dam of the NZ Cup hero Cruz Bromac.

The colt hails from a top American family of the Little Brown Jug winner Western Dreamer and the Canadian 3YO Colt of the Year Justin Passing.

Completing the Medhurst draft is Lot 12, a filly by the siring success A Rocknroll Dance from a family replete with black type performers. Her first three dams are winners and have produced 22 foals for 21 starters and 20 winners

The first dam Towelling has left four foals for three winners including the Southern Cross heat winner Bee Gee’s Bandit ($128,688) and the Southern Cross placegetters Royal Jacquard and Maffioso Girl, while the grand-dam Catch A Bouquet left five winners from five foals and is the second dam of Purple Royale ($131,000), dam of the unbeaten My Purple Patch.

The third dam, Roses In Paris, a top racemare and Moonee Valley winner, really established this family as a force to be reckoned with. She left 12 winners – five inside 2:00 – including the SA Oaks and triple Southern Cross champion Thorninmyside, the Southern Cross and Golden Nursery victor King Grin and Pete’s Elect (1:51.6) and was the grand-dam of Forty Seven Flash (Southern Cross and Breeders Plate) and Jax Navaro.

The sale will also have an all aged section following the yearling sale.
