Saturday racing re-cap July 8th 2023

Racing Recap GLOBE DERBY Sat July 8
It’s not often a $4.40 winner to kick off the meeting would end up being the the longest priced winner of the night, but that was the case here in race one for SECRET JACK. The Shane Loome trained veteran led all the way for Michael Smith, a pattern of racing that would emerge successful for the remainder of the program.
Race two saw ALDEBARAN GWEN continue winning form with a never-in-doubt win in the NR up to 53 Trotters mobile for trainer Bronte Giorgio and an early double for Michael Smith. This 5yo mare is in career best form at the moment.
BROOKYINTHEPADDOCK has been a work in progress for trainer/driver Ryan Hryhorec, with the six year-old gelding having had only nine career starts to date. Being able to hold out speedster and race favourite Whata Optimist out of the machine proved to be a winning move as this son of Auckland Reactor recorded a PB winning mile rate of 1:57.5 in race three.
HANGING FIRE (1:55.7) RAKERO STORM (1:58) and DINO MO (1:56.9) stole the show at Globe Derby on Saturday night bringing up a treble for Greg Scholefield and Gaita Pullicino in races four, five and six. Greg has his team flying of late, with an envious strike rate when he makes the eight hour round trip from the south-east to the city. It will be fascinating to see how a horse like Hanging Fire will continue to measure up in the fast class ranks in the months ahead.
Race seven proved a competitive affair with COME ON SLOOPY being the third mare to win at the meeting aided by a well-judged drive by Wayne Hill. This was seasonal win number three from 34 starts (which also includes nine further placings) for the daughter of Captaintreacherous trained by Nick Tardio.
Race eight saw Claire Goble’s recent good form with trotters continue as IM HECTOR followed the trend of the night by scoring an all the way win. This time it was Corey Johnson steering home victory, and in doing so edges within three wins of the young drivers premiership leader Sam Pascoe.
