SA TROTS -Bullion Girl worth her weight in gold

HAVING grabbed a share of history at Globe Derby last night, classy youngster Bullion Girl has earned a break.

In what was her season’s finale, Bullion Girl upstaged the ‘boys’ in the South Australia Trotters’ Derby.

The three-year-old’s success comes a week after her Trotters’ Oaks triumph, making Bullion Girl just the second filly to complete the Blue Riband double.

Previously, Aftanoondelite was the only member of the ‘fairer sex’ to win both features, which she achieved in 2009.

It should be noted, the Oaks had been absent from the calendar since 2011 before being reignited this season.

“She came through the Oaks run so well, I had to put her around again in the Derby,” trainer Shaun Adams said. “It was very pleasing for her owners and I for her to win the Oaks and now even more special to have her back up and win the Derby.”

With Adams in the cart, Bullion Girl obtained the perfect one-one trail from her inside of the second row draw as Hayoak led from the pole and Avenel Eagle occupied the seat in the breeze.

Three-wide around the home turn, the daughter of Wishing Stone reached the front in the shadows of the post to score by a half-neck from All The Trix. In a ‘blanket finish’, Hayoak was a head away third.

“With the right run I knew she was more than capable of winning as she goes well and has a good turn of speed,” Adams said. “She needed luck in the run from the draw, which she got and that helped.

“That will see her out for the season now and she’ll enjoy a nice long break.”

Co-owned by Adams, the squaregaiter rated 2:02.4 over 2230 metres to take her record to six wins and four placings from 19 starts for earnings of $36,018.
