SA TROTS Peter Medhurst primed for bumper Sale

The name Medhurst is synonymous with harness racing not only in South Australia but along the eastern seaboard as well.

Based at Glencoe in the far south-east corner of SA, Peter Medhurst and his wife Lesley have bred, raced or sold a string of top flight performers over the last 30 years including Thorninmyside, King Grin, Pete’s Elect, Catch A Bouquet, Flaming Hero, Forty Seven Flash and more recently, Jamaican Rock and Jumping Jolt.

Long-time supporters of the SA yearling sales, the Medhurst’s will be represented by a colt and two fillies at the Southern Stars Sale to be held at the Gawler Barossa Jockey Club Complex, Evanston on Sunday.

The draft is spearheaded by a classy bay colt by the leading USA first crop sire Stay Hungry out of the Modern Art mare Jamaka Run (1:58.8), the dam of last year’s Group 2 juvenile winner Jamaican Rock and SA Sires Produce winner Jumping Jolt ($190,076). He is Lot 11 in the catalogue.

“This colt’s a bit special. He’s stylish and in the same mould as Jamaican Rock,” preparer Mandy Pascoe, of Ningana Park, said.

The first of the two fillies is Lot 2, a big, strong, rangy daughter of the proven sire Heston Blue Chip and the Bettor’s Delight mare Dazzling Delight, a half-sister to five 2:00 winners and three $100,000 earners.

Lot 17, a stunning filly by emerging sire Betting Line, is out of Surfing Royal, a daughter of the dual SA Broodmare of the Year Surfing Queen. She’s a close relative of horses the calibre of Southern Cross winner Forty Seven Flash ($166,664), Flaming Hero ($161,441) and Three Queens.

“She’s a quality individual,” Mandy Pascoe stated.

The Medhurst trio are all Vicbred and Southern Cross eligible.

All yearlings offered through the sale are eligible for the $50,000 Southern Stars Yearling Sale Race to be conducted at Globe Derby Park no later than June 30, 2024.

A $20,000 bonus will be paid to the owner of the first filly past the post, a $2,000 bonus to the winning breeder and a $2,000 bonus to the breeder of the first filly past the post.
