SA TROTS Barney produces the first win for Declan Whelan

A VETERAN and a “Johnny Come Lately” combined for an unlikely win at Globe Derby Tuesday night.

At his 185th start, Barney Fella caused an upset by scoring at $16 with Declan Whelan in the cart.

Having just his 15th drive, Whelan registered his maiden victory.

A wet-behind-the-ears 18-year-old, Whelan was ‘still wearing short pants’ when 12-year-old Barney Fella began racing.

Making the transition through pony trots, Whelan is naturally thrilled with his initial success.

“It was an amazing feeling…still is,” Whelan said. “I have a fair family history in the sport and came up through the ponies, so driving is always something I have wanted to do.

“To get my first win out of the way is pretty great.”

Settling Barney Fella towards the tail of the field from barrier six, Whelan angled the son of Pacific Fella four-wide around the home turn before he sprinted to a two-and-a-half metre win from Come On Sloopy.

Freedom Writer was two-and-a-half metres away third in 1:59 over 2230 metres.

“I’m very pleased with that effort,” trainer Clinton Fuller said. “Barney went very well and Declan followed instructions perfectly.

“He’s not the easiest horse to drive as he is an old horse with a lot of old tricks, but Declan handled him well and got the best out of him.”
