Bains heading from Pirie to Kapunda with Dreamalittledream
A training double at Port Pirie on Saturday has propelled Peter Bain into the top 10 on the SA premiership.
Wins by Dreamalittledream and Open The Gates took Bain’s season tally to 17 winners from just 29 starters at am amazing strike rate of 54%.
He is now sitting in eighth position on the SA Trainers premiership.
Both Dreamalittledream and Open The Gates were driven by Wayne Hill and found the front in their respective races.
Backed from $2.05 into $1.70 favourite, Dreamalittledream, from gate three, had a short battle for the early lead with Ubetonred ($3.80) which had begun quickly from the pole position in the Ladbrokes Kapunda Spring Cup (heat one) over 1609 metres.
After a quick 28.2 second first quarter, Hill was able to back the tempo off for a 32.6 second 400 metres before dashing home a final 800 metres in a slick 57.7 seconds.
Dreamalittledream beat Ubetonred by 2-1/2 metres with Lincs Poor Boy ($34), three metres away third.
The five-year-old mare has now won four of her five starts since joining the Bain stable.
She will head to Kapunda on Sunday, October 5 for the $9999 Kapunda Spring Cup Final (1800m) to try and add to her record.
With her excellent gate speed, with a favourable draw, Dreamalittledream should prove hard to beat.
Open The Gates, a two-year-old filly, was having her first start for Bain after doing her early racing under the care of Emma Stewart in Victoria.
Coming from gate five, the filly did a bit of work to find the front but once at the head of affairs she was never seriously challenged.
Open The Gates ($1.22 fav) drew away to win by 8-1/2 metres from Queen Crocker ($81) with Ella Kate ($18), a half-metre away third.
She rated a smart 1:57.3.
Open The Gates is not expected to back up this Saturday in the $9999 SA Sapling Stakes (1800m) at Globe Derby Park but have her next run in the $8500 SA Golden Nursery Stakes heats at the same track on Saturday, October 18.
Port Pirie trainer Michael Dennis supplied the quinella in the Pirie Signs & Designs Pace (1609m).
He prepares both Niteonthetown ($3.80) which scored a neck win from Antiguas Be Be ($2.30 fav).
For the second time at the meeting, driver Samantha Hill was able to catch her husband Wayne in the shadows of the finishing post.
Earlier at the meeting, Hill on her own horse My Ultimate Flynn came up the sprint lane to catch her husband Wayne on the leader Big Black Betty.
This time, Antiguas Be Be went clear in the home straight for Wayne Hill but Niteonthetown, driven by Samantha, came down the outside to grab the win.
Another Port Pirie-trained winner was Hy Filante in the Spencer Motor Company Pace (2050m).
Trained by brothers Ryan and Trent Hoare, Hy Filante ($4.40) found the front and was well rated by Michael Smith to win by a head from the fast-finishing Shireen ($4.40) with Burning Hot ($9) three metres away third.
Placed at his previous two runs, Hi Filante was a deserved winner and has been a good investment since coming down from New South Wales.
The training combination of Jill Neilson and Katie Wilson are regular supporters of the Port Pirie Club and were rewarded with a win by Cyclone Brenda in the McBride Maintenance & Building Services Pace (1609m).
Avoiding early interference, driver Danielle Hill brought Cyclone Brenda ($6) with a well-timed run to win by 14 metres from Give Us A Wink ($17) with Nykea Courage ($11) a half-metre away third.
South Australian harness racing steps up a level in October beginning this Saturday at Globe Derby Park.
Feature races this week are the Veterinary Surgeons Cup, SAHRC Derby, SA Sapling Stakes and the Gramel Trotters Cup.
Sunday sees Kapunda host a meeting with the Kapunda Spring Cup final the feature.
