SA TROTS -2024 Southern Stars Yearling Sale a Success

By Peter Wharton

The 2024 Southern Stars Yearling Sale, held at the Gawler Barossa Jockey Club Complex recently, was further testament of the upward trend of the harness racing industry in South Australia.

Of the 14 lots presented on the day, only one was passed in at a price of $15,000.

The sales aggregated $207,000 for an excellent average of $15,900.

The top price paid was $40,000 for the Captain Crunch colt out of the Washington VC mare Steam Washed NZ, offered by Bob and Zita Maloney and secured by Mount Gambier horseman David Drury.

Other good prices were achieved by the Stay Hungry-Crown Royale colt ($27,000), the Stay Hungry-Nevada Esmeralda filly ($27,000) and the Stay Hungry-Royal Jacquard colt ($23,000).

The sale was run wholly by volunteers from SA BOTRA with the support of Harness Racing SA.

“The funding of the sales races by HRSA allowing no commission to vendors was an incentive for the breeding industry,” sale co-ordinator Lee-Ann Pangrazio said.

“The rejuvenated SA BOTRA Kindergarten Series is a real winner for young horses in the State.”
