SA TROTS - 2022 SA Cups Series Port Pirie winner

AS ONE door closes, another opens…

In the case of Jimmy Mack the ‘doors’ come in the shape of wins.

A revelation since arriving in South Australia, Jimmy Mack notched nine successive wins before his sequence was snapped with a luckless fifth in last month’s Strathalbyn Cup.

Bouncing back to the winners’ circle at his following outing, the Les Harding-trained gelding completed consecutive victories by capturing last night’s Port Pirie Cup.

Victorian owner Merv Butterworth, who races his team in partnership with his wife, Meg, is confident the two triumphs are the beginning of another streak for the son of Washington V C.

“He has been a marvel since racing in South Australia,” Butterworth said. “He’s had 15 starts for 12 wins and a second and pocketed nearly $50,000 in stakes.

“In the cups carnival alone he’s had three starts for two wins and earned a touch over $11,000 and we’re only halfway through!

“We’ve also had Im Full Of Excuses in four Cups for three thirds and a second, picking up another $3500, so we’re having a terrific run with the two of them.”

Driven by Dani Hill during his latest moment of glory, Jimmy Mack overcame a second row draw and a tough three-wide run during the final lap to score by a metre-and-a-half from his stablemate, Im Full Of Excuses.

Breach The Beach was two metres away third in 1:59.8.

“Coming from the back line is never easy, but I knew he had the class to overcome it,” Butterworth said.

“Over 2530 metres on a good sized track like Port Pirie was always going to give him time and space to get into the race.

“The next cup is in Mount Gambier, but I haven’t decided if he will head down for that or wait for the free-for-all at Globe Derby the following week and then head to the Victor Harbor Cup the week after that.”
