Strathalbyn Harness Racing Club

In a first for South Australian harness racing, the SANFL Norwood Football Club will sponsor the time-honoured Strathalbyn Cup at Globe Derby Park on Saturday March 2.

The Strathalbyn HRC was formed in 1937 with the Strathalbyn Pacing Cup first raced in 1940. This year’s edition, to be run at Globe Derby Park as the Strathalbyn – Norwood Football Club Pacing Cup, will carry major prizemoney of $14,990.

The Strathalbyn Harness Racing Club has assembled a fantastic program which will also include the Strathalbyn – Pronto United Finances Trotters Cup worth $9,000 and SA’s biggest race for non-winners, the Strathalbyn – Valley Horse Transport Maiden.

In a unique race condition, the Maiden race will have a reverse barrier draw and the starters will race for $9,000. The Strathalbyn Club has also programmed an NR47 pacers race, the lowest points race for the evening, which also has a $9,000 prizemoney.

The Club will ensure that no participant goes home empty-handed. Every trainer will receive a $50 discount voucher for interstate transport courtesy of Valley Horse Transport and bottles of wine for those last to greet the judge. Marshall Batteries will be giving away lucky stall vouchers. A club spokesperson said that for many years the Strathalbyn Harness Racing Club has continued to support the lower-class horses in the industry who keep the race days ticking over – in essence, the foundation of local harness racing. The race meeting couldn’t have come together without the support of the SAHRC (Globe Derby Park). The Strathalbyn Club will again receive support from the SAHRC staff to make the evening a success and make our visiting Club feel at home. Harness Racing SA’s David Thuen has also provided great assistance by adjusting fronts, allowing the Strathalbyn Club to revise the racing program.

The Strathalbyn Club gives special thanks to the upcoming race night sponsors – the Norwood Football Club, Integrated Waste Services, Pronto United Financial Services, Mustang Owners Club of S.A, The Home Fire and Marshall Batteries.
