SA Bred winner is worth Ravin About

ONE person’s bid to boost the local breeding industry is beginning to gain the desired outcome.

Acquiring proven stallion Tinted Cloud in 2019, prominent horseman Shane Loone offered free services to South Australian broodmare owners, with 34 breeders taking advantage of the goodwill gesture.

Tinted Cloud is best-known as the sire of former star pacer, Smoken Up.

“He was pretty much unwanted as a commercial stallion given his age, but I felt he still had value as a sire,” Loone said. “Once I got him I decided to give free services to breeders over here in hope of building up the two-year-old numbers.

“Obviously breeding them is a long term solution to the immediate problem as our two-year-old numbers are down, but now we should start seeing a few of those foals at the races.

“I’ve had a few contact me saying they are pretty impressed with their foals from the services, which is great to hear.”

As for the 34 services, they resulted in 27 pregnancies and 22 live foals – one of which scored at Globe Derby recently.

Fourth upon debut, Ravin outclassed his older rivals at his following start for trainer Michael Dennis.

Driven by Ryan Hryhorec, Ravin enjoyed the ideal one-one trip on his way to a 2:01 victory over 1800 metres as Buzz Bomb and One More Star filled the placings.

“You can’t really go wrong with a free service, so to get one as nice as him is a terrific result,” Dennis said. “He’s still green and has a lot to learn, but has shown a fair bit of promise.

“I’ve got no doubt we are going to have some fun with him.”

Ravin earned himself a $6,000 2 year-old Southern Cross bonus for winning, and will be eligible for another $6,000 bonus upon his first win in SA as a 3 year-old.
