Personal milestone for Jayson Finnis

SOUTH Australian reinsman Jayson Finnis notched a personal milestone yesterday.

Making a trip across the border from his Mount Gambier base, Finnis partnered Lunar Girl to victory in Charlton.

By rating 2:02.5 over 2100 metres, Lunar Girl provided Finnis with his 500th win.

Finnis registered his maiden victory behind Jewel Of Destiny in Gawler on March 28, 2008.

“I still remember my first win around the old Gawler track,” Finnis said. “I was 16 and couldn’t have been more excited.

“Back then all I wanted was to make a living from the game as a driver without thinking about reaching 500 wins or anything like that.

“A lot of time and plenty of kilometres since then to reach 500 though.

“Living in Mt Gambier is pretty far from the action so it takes a lot of travelling to get a winner let alone 500,”

Trained by Finnis’ wife Alyce, Lunar Girl led throughout from the pole to score by two-and-a-half metres from My Lucky Rock.

Bundy Shark was a metre away third.

“My kids named her after a cartoon character, so they were pretty happy to see her win,” Finnis said.

“I still get a kick out of driving a winner, but helping my wife train them is very fulfilling.

“The aim with the stable is to try and improve the stock each season to race more at a metropolitan level…and of course, the next 500 wins!”
