Lords, Ladies to light up Globe Derby Park
By Peter Wharton
The cream of the crop of South Australia’s two-year-olds will take centre stage at Globe Derby Park on Saturday night as they vie for success in the Lordship Stakes for colts and geldings and the Ladyship Stakes for fillies.
The time-honoured classics, which are sponsored by SA Harness Racing Club patrons Kevin and Kay Seymour, both carry prize money of $15,000.
In addition, six of the 10-horse field in the Ladyship Stakes and 2 runners in the Lordship Stakes are also eligible for the $5,000 first Globe Derby Park win bonus provided by SAHRC.
Kojax, one of two runners from the Ryan Hryhorec stable, looks the horse to beat in the Lordship on the strength of his close third after sitting parked throughout in the Sapling Stakes.
One Aussie, the winner of the Sapling at his debut, Seabreeze Lad, who finished fourth in the $100,000 APG Sales Classic at Melton, and the double winner Cecil Peak represent the main dangers.
Another of the Hryhorec team, South Aussie Star, should prove the horse to beat from a favourable draw in the Ladyship. The Ride High filly followed her all the way win in the APG Sales Classic with a neck second in the Sapling.
The northern filly Sal Wester, who has been in the money in five of her eight starts, and the APG Sales Classic runner-up Chiara Mara loom as the biggest threats to South Aussie Star.
Hot Off The Canvas, one of two debutants in the race, has the breeding to make her a realistic winning chance. She is a daughter of champion sire Art Major and the three-time Group winning mare Steam Washed NZ.
The Lordship Stakes and Ladyship Stakes are the key features of a bumper 11 race card at Globe Derby Park on Saturday.
