STEWARDS INQUIRY – Trainer Mr A Camilleri (GOODBOY COWBOY)

Panel: T Styles, S Ewen, P Fricker

Called to inquiry: trainer Tony Camilleri

On Sunday 30th July 2023 Harness Racing South Australia Stewards conducted an inquiry into a report from Racing Analytical Services Ltd. which had detected the presence of the prohibited substance Heptaminol in the urine sample collected from GOODBOY COWBOY following its second placing in Race 4 the MCBRIDE MAINTENANCE & BUILDING SERVICES PACE which was run at Port Pirie on Sunday 30th April 2023. After the initial findings from Racing Analytical Services Ltd. the confirmation was provided by Racing Science Centre.

At todays inquiry Mr. Tony Camilleri provided evidence that he had commenced to use a new product ENERSELEN, which was confirmed in his log book, however, he had not sought advice in respect to withdrawal times for its use prior to racing. Reviewing the analytical reports on the sample and also a report from Dr.D Sims, HRSA Consultative Veterinary Surgeon, Stewards accepted the evidence as a plausible explanation for the prohibited substance being detected in the urine sample.

After taking all matters into consideration, Stewards issued a charge in accordance with AHRR 190 (1), (2) and (4), the particulars of the charge were, that as the Trainer of GOODBOY COWBOY he did present the gelding to race at Port Pirie on Sunday 30th April 2023, in Race 4, the MCBRIDE MAINTENANCE & BUILDING SERVICES PACE where it finished second in the race, when not free of a prohibited substance.

Mr. Camilleri pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following submissions in relation to penalty and receiving references tendered by Mr Camilleri, which showed his extensive involvement in the industry, including roles he voluntarily undertakes at Broken Hill, to assist persons in mentoring them in Harness Racing, Stewards believed the following penalty for the charge be imposed.

For the breach of AHRR 190 (1),(2) and (4) a Fine of $2,750 was imposed.

Mr. Camilleri was also directed to pay $250 towards the cost for the confirmatory analysis of the sample, under the provisions of AHRR 310 (1)

Furthermore, in accordance with AHRR 195 GOODBOY COWBOY will be disqualified from the race and HRSA would amend the placings.

Mr. Camilleri was advised of his rights of appeal, against the decisions of the Stewards.
