Regional Racing Allowance
Harness Racing SA is pleased to announce a new initiative that will further support regional racing in South Australia.
With the upcoming Port Pirie and Mount Gambier seasons set to commence in October and November respectively (and Victor Harbor in December), HRSA will introduce a Regional Racing Allowance to the value of $50 for each starter.
This allowance will apply to all starters at all meetings at Port Pirie, Mount Gambier, and the Christmas meeting at Victor Harbor. After a three-month commencement period (Oct-Dec) it will undergo a review for update to the 2024 racing season. After consideration and consultation, the allowance will be paid to trainers’ accounts. There is no cap to the number of runners that the allowance applies to.
HRSA CEO Dean Elliott is pleased to add this news to the list of recent growth strategies “the initiative will further support those who commit to regional racing in SA. This allowance will assist with offsetting rising costs in many areas including travel and insurance to name a couple. It should be noted that each segment of our industry requires HRSA’s full attention, and when it comes to trainers – there is no more pivotal group. Trainers take on risk, responsibility, ownership, and long hours. When their boxes are at full occupancy there aren’t too many better key indicators to the health of an industry.”
Prior to incremental increases from October 2022, prizemoney and bonus increases enjoyed by owners and connections will amount to a mark close to $1.2m per year, of which drivers fees will increase by approximately $80,000.
Mount Gambier HRC President Simon Phillips is excited by what the allowance could deliver for the region “this will be a nice boost for racing at The Mount. Being a close border community, we rely on Victorian participation, as do the Western districts of Victoria rely on us for runners. The allowance will hopefully entice further support to our meetings, which are fast becoming attractive to more participants given recent announcements.”
Port Pirie HRC President and Country Clubs President Mick Darling is also enthused with the news “the allowance is much welcomed for regional racing in SA. HRSA made this a discussion point with committees and members at the recent Mount Gambier and Port Pirie AGMs. Having enjoyed some horse population growth in SA this year, we hope the positive flow on effect is felt across all meetings during the busy spring/summer racing period and beyond.”
