Corey Johnson saddles four-timer and 400 milestone at Globe
South Australia’s top concession reinsman Corey Johnson had a night out at Globe Derby Park on Saturday driving the first four winners on the program.
Johnson, 23, passed a significant milestone of 400 career victories, with the wins.
“My career best is five winners at a meeting,” Johnson said.
“I achieved that at Mildura on March 10 this year but to land four at a metro (metropolitan) meeting in Adelaide is very special.
“I was hoping to drive a winner tonight, but to finish with four is amazing.”
Johnson finished with a season-best 90 winners in 2025, and this year sits on 44 at the halfway mark of the year.
In South Australia, the young driver has 28 wins, and he sits fifth on the state premiership and is well placed to beat last year’s seventh place finish with 54 victories.
Johnson partnered Clarenden Express in the opening race, the Horse Queened Pace (1800m), for Wasleys owner-trainer-breeder Claire Goble.
Backed from $8 into $5.50, Clarenden Express found the front from gate two, was rated perfectly, to win by 2-1/2 metres from Magic Captain ($2.50 fav) with Lochinvar Magic ($2.60), two metres away third.
The winner rated a smart 1:57.8, sprinting home a last half in brilliant 56.7 seconds.
It was a timely win for trainer Claire Goble who said the first prize would help pay for major repairs needed for her car.
“I found out I am going to need about $2000 for mechanical repairs so this win is perfect,” Goble said.
Another impressive win for Johnson was on After The Chase, trained by Trent Hoare, in the Bianco Reinforcing Pace (1800m) which was heat three of a race which will culminate in an $8000 final this Saturday.
Sent out the $2.90 favourite from gate seven, Johnson went back to last early on After The Chase before coming wide over the last 600 metres to win by four metres from Parisian Bandit ($8) with Twin Connection ($7.50), three metres away third.
Owners Shane Smith and partner Melissa Jarrett celebrated a two-state double as just 10 minutes before After The Chase’s win, My Ultimate Flynn, which they also own, won at Albion Park in Brisbane.
“I couldn’t believe the early speed,” Johnson said.
“Once they went so fast up front I knew my horse would be hard to beat.
“He has a quick sprint, I just had to time the run and he won well.”
Part-owner Shane Smith said After The Chase and Ice Queen had been purchased for $8000 in March from Paul Tonkin, who spent time training and working in South Australia several years ago.
“Paul knows what sort of horse is suited in South Australia so when he suggested this pair to Trent (Hoare) we were happy to purchase them,” Smith said.
“After The Chase has won three races for us to more than pay for the pair while Ice Queen has a win from just three starts.”
Johnson’s other two winners were a family affair with both trained by his father Lane.
Barack Enobrac ($4.60) led throughout in the Bargain Steel Centre Pace (1800m) to win by two metres from Big Black Betty ($2.50 fav) with Miss Out ($15), two metres away third.
The young reinsman had to drive hard early on Barack Enobrac to find, and hold, the lead from gate two.
“He is a bit of a thinker,” Johnson said.
“When you ask him to go you have to keep working on him.
“If you try to start and stop mid-race, sometimes you can feel him say he isn’t interested.
“Once we found the front, I had to keep reminding him top keep his mind on the job. He has the ability, we just need to keep him focussed.”
Trainer Lane Johnson’s double came up when Shireen dashed up the sprint lane to win the Ray White Commercial Adelaide Pace (2230m).
Shireen ($5.50) won by 1-3/4 metres from Ashante Prince ($2 fav) with Lonestar Warrior ($12), two metres away third.
Johnson led early from gate one on the mare but then allowed Lonestar Warrior to find the front.
“Shireen was having her first run from a spell, and over the 2230 metres, we didn’t want her to have too tough as run,” Johnson said.
“She loved racing with a trail, and when the tempo lifted down the back, it gave her the chance to sprint home.”
Jawsoflincoln, a winner at last Saturday’s rain-shortened meeting, made it two wins in a row taking out the Hahn Super Dry Pace (1800m).
Backed from $2.60 into $1.60 favourite, Jawsoflincoln, found the front from gate four for driver Greg Rogers and was never really challenged scoring by five metres from Clarenden Sakura ($13) with Ozzie Joybell ($19), four metres away third.
Trainer Ross Collins said the mare had suffered hoof problems throughout her career, but he felt she was now as good as when she displayed ability as an early two-year-old.
