Billingers massive milestone achieved

ONE of Australia’s most beloved broadcasters has led the chorus of congratulations as seasoned horseman Darren Billinger completed a milestone at Globe Derby last night.

Obtaining his driver’s licence way back in 1979, the veteran began training his own team during the 1990s, with his initial success coming via Go Midnight Rambler on April 18, 1999.

Jaybee Queen was Billinger’s maiden driving win in February 1980.

Inbetween, Billinger has won more than 900 races as a driver, including Group One glory.

As a trainer, Billinger registered his 600th victory thanks to Twin Connection.

When discussing his pending moment in the spotlight, Billinger stated “I can tell you though, Bruce McAvaney called my first win, which was at Kadina, and I’m positive it remains the highlight of his broadcasting days.”

In an exclusive, National Trotguide can reveal McAvaney does consider Billinger’s win a major moment of his career.

“I have called AFL Grand Finals, Melbourne Cups, Olympics, Tennis, Test Matches and even hosted the Brownlow medal, but calling Darren’s win with Jaybee Queen almost five decades ago remains a highlight of my career,” McAvaney commented.

“I will never forget a young Darren driving Jaybee Queen in the breeze for a tough win.

“Pass on my congratulations to Darren on his milestone.”

For the record, Twin Connection rated 1:58.7 over 1800 metres as Whata Optimist and Dont Tell Alice filled the placings.

With Billinger in the cart, took his tally to 23 wins and 27 placings from 115 starts for earnings of $68,918.
